WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says he will do what he can to reach out to Republicans but on some issues philosophical differences will be impossible to overcome. Obama was asked about bipartisanship at the end of a fiscal summit that involved congressional Republicans and Democrats, economists and business leaders. After brief remarks, Obama called on Republican Sen. John McCain, his former presidential rival, for the first question. He took several questions from lawmakers. Obama got no support from House Republicans for his $787 billion stimulus package and just three votes in the Senate. He joked about opposition from Rep. Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House. Obama said he will keep on talking to Cantor and "some day, sooner or later, he's going to say Obama had a good idea." |
